DELIAN ACADEMY

FOR NEW MUSIC

International Academy for Composers & Sound Artists
7 - 16 June 2019

© Yiorgis Yerolympos

WHO WE ARE

The Delian Academy for New Music is an international summer academy for composers and sound artists located on the island of Mykonos, Greece.

Curated under the auspices of Georges Aperghis and Grypario Cultural Center, the Academy derives its name from the nearby island of Delos, the birthplace of god Apollo, and a UNESCO world heritage site.

Unlike top-down organization programs, our Academy is a participant-driven meeting where attendees co-decide and create the agenda for a series of symposia, workshops, and concerts with the guidance of faculty and staff.

The 2019 edition will take place from June 7 to June 16 in Grypario Cultural Center of Mykonos. Participating composers will have the chance to take part in masterclasses, presentations, workshops and have their music performed by our ensembles in residence. The main language of the Academy will be English. Additional languages may be used in private masterclasses.

ENSEMBLES IN RESIDENCE

Klangforum Wien

And just as in their art, Klangforum Wien itself is nothing but a force, barely disguised by its metier, to improve the world. The moment they step onto the podium, the musicians know that only one thing counts: everything. Eros and the absoluteness of this conviction are at the root of the inimitable quality of their concerts.

TAK Ensemble

TAK is a quintet that delivers energetic and virtuosic performances of contemporary classical music. The ambitious ensemble “impresses with the organicity of their sound, their dynamism and virtuosity — and, well, just a dash of IDGAF as they slay the thorniest material like it’s nothing” (Q2 Music). Dedicated to the commissioning of new works and direct collaboration with composers and other artists, TAK promotes ambitious programming at the highest level, fostering engagement both within the contemporary music community and the artistic community at large. Their debut album “Ecstatic Music: TAK plays Taylor Brook” was released by New Focus Recordings in September 2016, to critical acclaim; it was featured as Q2 Music’s Album of the Week by WQXR, and was listed in the Top 10 Classical Albums of 2016 by The Boston Globe, which praised the “young, fearless players… fluid grace and confidence.”

It is a building complex of 1600 m2 featuring a 350-seat concert hall with a 80 m2 stage, a delicate foyer, and a number of smaller educational rooms. There is also a free parking space and a playground. The building is located in Argyraina, just 1 km from the center of Mykonos.

Q.  I don’t have a recording of the score I am submitting; can I send a midi realization?

A.   Unfortunately, we cannot accept midi realizations.

Q.  I am applying as an electronic composer/sound artist. I have no scores for my work or my scores are unconventional. What should I send?
